Trent Woods

This large, maure development lies between New Bern and the Trent River. It has been incorporated to give residents better control over their neighborhoods, and there is virtually no commercial development within its borders. Its winding lanes contain some of the most posh neighborhoods and dwellings in the area. New Bern Golf and Country Club is located in Trent Woods, and national best-selling author Nicholas Sparks is a resident of this upscale community.

Trent Woods is composed of several subdivisions, some of which are primarily waterfront property. Most of the residences tend toward conservative rather than contemporary architectural styles and are constructed of wood, brick or stucco. Homes are large, with two and three stories, and usually have attached or separate two-car garages. Lots are spacious, wooded and impeccably landscaped, often with Spanish moss draped in towering trees. If you take a drive through Trent Woods in the spring, you'll be greeted by a stunning display of flowering trees and shrubs.

In addition to the country club, the area boasts other amenities, such as the Eastern Carolina Yacht Club. The average price range for a non-waterfront home in Trent Woods is $150,000 to $800,000. Waterfront homes are quite pricey and can go up to $1.6 million.

Garber Methodist Church is located in Trent Woods.

In addition to single family homes, there are several townhouses and duplexes. The Trent River, Haywood Creek, Wilson Creek and Jimmies Creek offer many waterfront choices.  All are accessible to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Neuse River.

Subdivisions include: Country Club Hills, Country Club Park, Wilson Creek, Creek’s End, Bellefern, Trent Shores, Fox Hollow, The Vineyard

New Bern's Fourth District, Small but beautiful describes this special neighborhood.  Absolutely close to everything.

Platted in 1926, this community of six blocks includes a large group of Colonial Revival and Georgian Revival houses of the late 1920s period.  Relatively few houses were built shortly after its inception since its beginning was just on the heels of the depression.

DeGraffenried Park was the last suburban development in New Bern started prior to WW II and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Historic Riverside

The tract of land now known as Riverside was purchased in 1880 by William Dunn.  By,1894, Riverside, New Bern’s first suburban neighborhood was created.

National Avenue running through Riverside is known locally for the canopy of majestic trees that grace its boundaries.  The avenue was also one of the first paved roads in New Bern, leading to the National Cemetery established February 1, 1867.  The granite curbs still line this stately road, adding to the historic atmosphere.  The district is composed of approximately 14 blocks of largely residential development along the banks of the Neuse River in northeast New Bern.

Riverside was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and received Local Historic Designation in 2004.  Riverside is also known for having one of the largest percentages of contributing structures in a single district.

But the very best part of this community is the people.  You can always see people walking their dogs, folks sitting on porches and everyone looking out for the older folks and watching out for the young ones.

There are two parks in Riverside.  One is great for the family and the other, though small, is on the river where you can take a break, sit on the bench and look out over the Neuse.

The Historic Riverside Neighborhood Association was established in 1992 with fellowship being its main purpose.  The association extends beyond the historic boundaries to all neighbors.

We are all looking forward to 2010 and New Bern’s Tri-centennial celebration.  Riverside will join the celebration by participating in the annual Spring Homes and Garden Tour and in December a visit to Riverside will give you a look into “Christmas Past and Christmas Presents II”, come see Riverside in all its Christmas glory.

Greenbrier
Greenbrier is the community that surrounds The Emerald, a Rees Jones designed championship course that immediately became one of the best golf courses in eastern Carolina. Rated 3 1/2 stars by Golf Digest, it is the centerpiece of a vital and extremely active population. Home to the Curtis Strange Classic, this challenging course is popular and very beautiful.

Location, location location!! Never more applicable than when speaking of this community. Prices range from $170,000 for patio homes and $200,000 to $550,000 for single family homes on 1/2 an acre. There are 660 homes in Greenbrier. Greenbrier is in the center of the action--the community that characterizes New Bern today!

Right across the road from Greenbrier is one of the most spectacular medical complexes you'll see outside of a million person city.  McCarthy Square has everything and every medical  specialty anyone could possibly need!  Dozens of individual practices are headquartered here,  and the new multi-million dollar surgery center for the regional hospital.  The state-of-the-art Harris Teeter grocery with sushi bar is one block from the entrance.

When we say near everything--that's no exaggeration!  YET still Greenbrier retains its original forest aspect.  Comprising 660 homes, towering pines frame the streets. Canada geese, blue herons, pilated woodpeckers, deer, foxes and raccoons aren't uncommon. But the wildest life is kids on roller blades and bikes who ride safely on limited access streets.

Volunteerism and second careers are a way of life for those early retirees who have chosen New Bern and Greenbrier. Executives who want to be right in the action choose this community. Ditto for families who enjoy a golf/tennis/swimming club for their kids within walking distance.  The patio home section Fairways West, features modest 3 bedroom 2 bath homes on a slab, so poplar, they almost sell by word of mouth!  The growing economy certainly offers many opportunities for second careers. The benefits to the community of such a large number of talented volunteers is immediately visible in the enormous number of service organizations.

Taberna

Taberna Community of New Bern, North Carolina

Taberna is almost built out.  So fast, even the developers can't believe it!  This elegant,  Carolina style neighborhood was developed by Weyerhaeuser.  Taberna, meaning "place of hospitality" was the first name of Bern Switzerland, New Bern's sister city  namesake.  It is about 5 miles east of downtown New Bern on Highway 70 east--heading to Cherry Point  and  the beaches,  about 40 min. away.  Just far enough actually. We are not in the hurricane No. #1 hit zone-(despite what National TV told you.)

Taberna is more attractive every day as the trees fill out and the elegant plantings mature. The community  encompasses 1,100-acres, and offers a championship golf course, canoe trails, tennis, swimming pool, etc. Approximately 700-800 homes in Taberna. Clubhouse is gorgeous!  (see picture) The clubhouse styling is based on a famous old castle in Berne; most of the streets have Swiss names.  Elegant one-story duplexes/townhouses available. Homes begin around $225,000 up to $700,000.

Downtown Historic District

Historic Downtown New Bern (View Map) is one of the finest historic districts in the nation and is comprised of the Downtown Business District (south of Broad Street to the Trent River) and the Downtown Residential District (North of Broad Street to Queen Street).  Beautifully maintained historic homes dating back to the mid 1700's.  Some of these are incredible to say the least. Large and palatial with beautiful garden areas. Others are neat bungalows, perfectly manicured, as well as condos and townhouses.

In the Downtown Business District many buildings have been converted to small shops on the ground floor with living quarters on the second and third floors.

Downtown is very "happening", with city and county governmental buildings, New Bern Riverfront Convention Center, Union Point Riverside park, hotels, quaint shops, excellent restaurants, antiques, crafts, art studios, clothing, gourmet coffee shops an excellent civic theatre, and the beautiful reproduction of North Carolina’s first Governor’s Mansion, Tryon Palace. All within walking distance! The Neuse and Trent rivers intersect downtown making for a picturesque environment.  Be prepared to be invited to someone’s front porch for conversation, and a drink,  if you are walking around the Downtown Historic District, the neighbors are very friendly and outgoing.

And the cost of historic homes in New Bern NC is a fraction of what you'd pay in Alexandria or Williamsburg, Virginia, or New England. And the weather sure has these locales beat!

New Bern's historic district was fairly recently re-discovered. As we drive through, you'll note the restoration going on.  But there are some absolute jewels waiting to be brought back to life. Living here will involve you in the Tryon Palace social whirl and activities, home tours, tourists will be photographing your house, and neighbors are working and welcoming. You can't help but be involved.  Your home will probably already be richly documented when you purchase it; there are reams of info available on the history of the district.

Organizations (New Bern Preservation Foundation) have worked long and hard to protect the New Bern charm and character. They are professionals who love to share their enthusiasm in the homes and streets. Many landmarks are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. You'll find most of them in the downtown historic district.

North of Broad Street, the houses are definitely top drawer. We're talking about a dozen square blocks of elegant mansions, family homes, dated from the 18th to the 20th century.   Since New Bern was captured and occupied early in the Civil War, the town fared better than most and kept many fine mansions, which were used by the occupying forces as hospitals and headquarters.

The Neuse River is the east boundary and we'll point out the many widow's walks on top of delightful houses. Prices of some of these near the river can reach over a million dollars; many smaller homes are in the $200,000 to $ 400,000 range as you get farther from the Neuse.

The redevelopment groups are presently working to garner funds to restore the Victorian train station and the area nearby will certainly be a "good buy" investment. Home prices through the area vary. Remember "location, location, location!"  Add in the condition and historic value, and the "charm factor" to figure its market value.
