A well-known franchise. Ribs, burgers, all the fancy salads you could dream up. Pastas especially varied. Quesadillas the best. Desserts yummy! Drink specialties every day. Take a date.*

ARTURO'S

OLA MUCHACHOS!
Glenburnie across from Harris Teeter. This newest Mexican restaurant is packing them in! Prices reasonable, menu very extensive, service improving, food good.

THE BERNE RESTAURANT

Corner of Glenburnie and Neuse Blvd. ( 2900).
A New Bern old timer, try it for a full breakfast with all the trimmings. Home style lunches and dinners served, grocery store rolls, grits optional.

BILLY'S HAM AND EGGS

1308 S. Glenburnie Rd.
Breakfast and lots of it. No atmosphere, but its popularity says there's no need for frills. Fried everything, fresh, hot, and fast service. Lunches ditto; open late for supper; prices are better than dessert. Locals' favorite. Breakfast buffet- all you could eat ( in a lifetime.)

CAROLINA BAGEL

Village Sq. Trent Rd.
Where the New Bern elite meet to greet and eat. Packs 'em in and only the limited space holds it back. You'll love breakfasts here, you can get the works (even pancakes), or their homemade gourmet bagels and muffins with a variety of cream cheese flavors. Lunch is terrific too!

CATERED AFFAIR

3402 Trent Rd.
For lunch and now for dinner in an enlarged space, try this full service restaurant. Decorated for the ladies, Limited menu, but very done well. Even has entertainment some evenings. Desserts are worth the guilt!

CAPTAIN RATTY'S

corner Middle & S. Front
You'll remember Ratty's as a maritime gift store. No longer. It is a now restaurant/oyster bar in the best location in town. Upstairs is a piano bar with live entertainment several nights a week. It has become the in place to relax and take friends from out-of-town.;

THE CHELSEA

335 Middle St.
Really handy location after sightseeing, features better than good specials every day, brand-new terrific menu. We consider it just about the best in town! Nice lunch menu, dinners are packed on weekends, call for reservations. Can take groups-if you call ahead. Nice New Bern 1920's style atmosphere. Upbeat

CHINA GARDEN

2016 Glenburnie Rd.
Great buffet. Small place, spotless. friendly Chinese staff; you'll love it. When thinking of going out to eat, China Garden will be top of your list.

COW CAFE

A St. in Riverside
Kids of all ages love this Maola Dairy eatery. Ice Cream made daily in the factory with flavors ranging from the ever-popular Moonilla to Chocolate CowPie!  A New Bern icon, it is enlarging as we speak. Holstein-themed and even the stools have udders! You'll love the ice cream and the fun.

DENISIA'S PIZZERIA

on upper Middle St.
Slowly it has made its niche, with fresh, fresh quality, a vegetable pizza to die for, lots of lunch specials and by-the-slice. Fairfield loves this pizza and they've started delivery out there.;

EL CERRO GRANDE

MOVED! Now on US 17 next to Smithfield's.
The number 2 in Mexican food now. Small place, tasty and huge servings! Aqui se habla espanol, y hay chimichangas y burritos extraordinarios!

The FLAME

2303 Neuse Blvd.
The traditional steak house. It does have other choices, the chicken teriyaki is featured. The Prime Rib is wonderful. They serve a cup of soup of the day with a great salad and the meal. Lots of food--and best beef around. Atmosphere has been upgraded and a Sunday Buffet is now offered. Wine list.

FISHBONZE

Town Square 1908 S. Glenburnie
Featuring the great menu, you will be blown away by the food here. Pasta seafood, beef, ribs --the crowds tell the story, it's A number ONE! The establishment knows the secret of a great restaurant, and it's everyone's favorite. Small place, full bar, eat-in, take out. Most stay, it's a friendly spot.

FRED AND CLAIRE'S

247 Craven Street
Downtown lunch spot mainly (serves dinners too.) Pretty extensive menu for such a small place. Crisp, spotless, business--like atmosphere. They serve food, not glamour. Good food, great sandwiches, and lunch specials served with fresh fruit and a dish of sherbert. No disappointments.

FAMOUS SUBS AND PIZZA

2210 Neuse Blvd.
The name says it all. It's known for the subs. Pizza is also good, but so are a lot of others in town. Subs are better. Lunch and dinner specials-locals favorite. Old time New Bernians have always loved this place with their own special spaghetti sauce.; Greek or Italian style. Good pizza.;

GREAT WALL OF CHINA

US 17S.
Great Chinese restaurant, branching out with a prime rib buffet on weekends. Try their version of General Cho's Chicken . All-you-can-eat buffet still packing them in. The evening buffet features shrimp and seafood. Lots of choices, as usual in a Chinese restaurant. You WILL like it

HENDERSON HOUSE

This is the most expensive and formal of New Bern's restaurants. The food is outstanding, Southern gourmet. The atmosphere is also lovely, in an old house with all the charm and service you'd want. Lunch and dinner Wed. through Sat. Reservations. Coat and tie.

INTERNATIONAL HOUSE OF PANCAKES

Corner US 17and McCarthy Bvld.
Still working on consistency and service. When it's right, it's a calorie lovers dream. Breakfasts OK, but probably skip lunch and dinner. Needs to work out the kinks

JERSEY MIKE'S

On S. Glenburnie
Sandwich and subs franchise is terrific. A top-notch spot, you cannot go wrong here. Soups too.

THE KITCHEN ON TRENT

Has enlarged, it is a very good place to eat! Warm, welcoming, the chicken salad is to die for! Trifle pricey, but you'll like their style. Desserts, breakfast goodies...must try

LATITUDE 35

Sheraton (downtown waterfront.)
Great atmosphere and good food in this restaurant, the Seafood Buffet on Fridays is especially popular, but it can range from outstanding to OK. Service spotty. Prices reasonable, ties not necessary.

MARINA SWEETS

Is a really nice, fun spot on Middle St.
Best tasting calories anywhere. Open late for summer-time strolling.

MOORE'S BARBECUE

Hwy. 17 S
If you haven't tried barbecue North Carolina style-this is the place to start. They have the best! Don't expect beef slabs with a tomato sauce, that's not our way. Shredded pork is the only TRUE barbecue. Fried shrimp sandwich also a good choice. No frills, (to understate the case). NOW try the shrimp and fish platters...you will like these! Moore's serves food, not fancy. It's an eatin' place--period. **** RIBS ON SATURDAYS ARE FOUGHT OVER!

NICKOLA'S

Village Shopping Center, Trent Rd.
This is the New Bern branch of a famous Morehead City eatery. Nickola's offers gourmet Italian and seafood specialties. We knew it from "over there and all New Bernians say, Hurrah! Serene, elegant understated ambience, and over-the-top taste sensations. We think you'll return to Nickola's

NEW BERN ROASTING CO

Middle St.
Coffee specialties, with some bagels and munchies and gourmet take-homes & gifts. They're responsible for the heavenly scent on lower Middle St.

OUTBACK Steakhouse

Howell Road.
Experience a magnificent meal Down Under Always full of people, and life. Great steaks, pasta dishes and a truly unique atmosphere. Close to all downtown shopping and hotels.

PAULA'S

1713 Red Robin Lane fronting on US 17S
Popular neighborhood eatery, great pizza, mostly Italian specialties. They seem to have all their ducks in the proverbial row: good food, fast service, friendly personnel; It CAN be done, Paula's proves it.

PARKWAY

2707 Neuse Blvd.
This is a New Bern old-timer. Rarely sees a tourist, they don't know about it. Mom can have a vegetable plate, Dad - steak, the kids - hamburgers... fried shrimp is good, hushpuppies are the best! Prices family friendly. Salad here is lettuce and tomatoes.

POLLOCK STREET DELI

208 Pollock St.
Open 7 days for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tiny rooms in authentic colonial house, but surprisingly serves a good-sized crowd. Can't go wrong here. More parking in rear. Service is sometimes leisurely. (Try the spinach chicken salad.) Terrific variety. Two minute walk from the new Convention Center

RAGAZZI'S

Hwy #17 S. fronting the Hampton Inn
Italian style eatery, a franchise with all the bases covered.  Light menu is outstanding, salads alone are enough to make you return often. The new menu and gargantuan servings will please most. Very nice atmosphere, great location make this restaurant a winner.

37TH ST. PIZZERIA

2402 Neuse Blvd.
Old-timer, with a late bar scene, Italian food and more Italian food, if you're not hungry for old-style Italian, go elsewhere! Good lunch menu, calzones a specialty. Pizza OK too. Draft and wine. Delivery.

TRENT RIVER COFFEE COMPANY

Craven St. Downtown.
A favorite stopping place. Wonderful coffee and pastries are the name of their game. (Hot Chocolate is not a good choice.) Terrific atmosphere, and a great spot to read your morning paper. Jazz performances regularly at night, a real asset!

TEXAS STEAK HOUSE

Near the Wal-Mart Twin Rivers mess of intersections.
Noisy, noisy, with the required Yee-haws in evidence. The onion appetizer is enough for 6 people! Prime rib is a great memory maker. Perfect for your beef fix. HOWEVER, THE CATFISH IS THE BEST IN TOWN!

ZARIFA'S

S. Glenburnie in the Market Square Center
Brand New and standing room only. Here's a wonderful success story New Bern style. Bosnian refugee family came to town a few years ago, started working in restaurants and Zarifa-- who was already a great chef, started this place a few weeks ago and are we flocking in here or what?! Lots of parking and they need it.

SCHOLTZSKI'S DELI

US 17 S.
Open and packing them in!   We love the little pizzas, extremely addictive. (And don't pass up the Ruebens.WAFFLE HOUSE
on US 17S
is open and doing that voodoo that they do so-o-o-o well... with all that chloresterol!   Rumor is we're getting another out James City way.

Other local franchises not to miss include:

Andy's for the absolute best cheese steak anywhere; Sonic for your 1950-60's fix; Golden Corral you know the drill here, if you need to feed a lot of starving people and are not interested in fine dining--they're always crowded; And, if you want to drive out of town...........
